Sophie Hardcastle is an exciting young writer currently based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. At the age of 16, Sophie was misdiagnosed with Major Depression. She was admitted to hospital four times over the next two years until she was finally diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Disorder.

In her brave and beautifully told memoir Running Like China, Sophie lays bare her story of mental illness and of ultimately realising that no matter how deep you have sunk, the surface is always within reach.

Her second book Breathing Under Water is a lyrical and emotionally powerful novel about life, death and learning to breathe in between. Sophie is determined to shatter the silence and help change the lives of thousands of young people living with mental illness.

Sophie works with Batyr and visits schools and universities regularly to inspire students through her experiences and help to break the stigma surrounding mental illness.
