Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival continues to attract students and adults alike to experience and enjoy some of Australia’s best known authors, illustrators, poets and performers.

Festival Launch

Wednesday July 13, 6.30pm - 8.30pm at Ron Bourne Hall, Whitsunday Anglican School, North Mackay.
The Festival Launch features a lively authors’ panel , the screening of LitVids 2.011 book trailer competition entries and the announcement of Whitsunday Voices Short Story Competition winners.

Thursday July 14 and Friday July 15, 9.30am – 2.30pm at Whitsunday Anglican School, North Mackay.
Australia’s top authors will present workshops, book talks and performances to over 5000 students.

Educators’ Forum

The Picture Book – a key to the Literature Strand of the new Australian Curriculum Thursday July 14, 4.00pm – 6.00pm at Whitsunday Anglican School, North Mackay. Prolific author, artist, illustrator and literacy advocate Narelle Oliver will share her personal perspective and writer’s expertise. Narelle will focus on the use of picture books as a tool in implementing the new Australian Curriculum. The Forum is a must for teachers, librarians and parents looking for unique ways to engage and challenge students in reading and writing.

Alman Partners Literary Dinner

Friday July 15, 7.00pm – 12.00am at Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.
This signature event and celebration of Whitsunday Voices features best-selling author Nick Earls as the guest speaker, along with author/comedian Oliver Phommavanh. With pre dinner drinks, a three course gourmet meal by Grinders Corporate Catering and dancing to The Formula, the night is sure to be especially memorable and entertaining!

SlammED! – workshop and competition

Sunday July 17 at Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.
SlammED! youth workshop for ages 12 – 18 at 3.00pm – 5.00pm in the Lynette Denny Space.
SlammED! poetry competition for ages 12 – 18 at 5:30pm – 7.00pm in the North Foyer.
This action packed afternoon of word weaponry and articulation artillery is the final flag in the War of the Words. David ‘Ghostboy’
Stavanger and Pascalle Burton will leave a path of rhyme destruction in their wake during this fast paced poetry workshop. 

The Vast Laugh

Sunday July 17 at Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.
For ages 18 years and over at 7.45pm – 9.00pm in the North Foyer.
Ghostboy and Pascalle (with multi-instrumentalist Richard Grantham) will return to the stage for the The Vast Laugh at 7.45pm. All members of the public over 18 years of age are welcome to attend this event.

Short Story Competition

All students from Years 3 to 12 are invited to participate the Whitsunday Voices Short Story Competition and be in the running for cash prizes donated by Friends of Mackay Libraries.

LitVids 2.011: Book Trailer Competition

A book trailer is a short film or animation which brings a book to life – on screen! Students can create their own book trailers, submit their entries to LitVids 2.011 and compete for some fantastic prizes. The winning entries of LitVids 2.011 will be screened at Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival.
