The Write Here Now Project

Whitsunday Voices - Monday, July 08, 2013

Late last year I wrote a blog for ABC Open, an Australia wide regional platform for creative content, called ‘Zines more popular than ever in a digital world’. It focused on the differences between a blog and a zine, how they are used and why you would use one over the other. It’s a conversation that comes up a lot when Jeremy and I run workshops, and for me a lot of it comes down to creative output and content.

Do you mind if someone stumbles upon your work online and can easily attribute, comment and criticise it – the content part of zines are often controversial, counter culture and personal. Can you hand your blog to a distant friend going through a similar situation. Sure you can send them the link, but when they’re in hospital, a computer may not be reachable.

While running Smells Like Zines Distro I have had numerous ‘send on’ requests – that means someone has bought a zine but wants it sent to their friend – someone dealing with a health crisis, depression, or a changing lifestyle. It could be diet, moving overseas or finding themselves broke and looking for options for cheap food/homebrew beer.

The Write Here Now Project offers participants a chance to explore both creating writing and non fiction in either a blog or zine format. Regular daily contributions will be uploaded online for a wider audience while being collected into a collaborative zine project to highlight the regions diverse community. Jeremy and I will facilitate an exploration of both zines and blogs, with participants work traversing both genres.

The MCA Zine Fair was the first event with the bike trailer as a workshop space, that could fit around 12 people with the table fully extended. We will be bringing this with us for the Mackay community to come and make their contributions.

We look forward to being part of the festival and Mackay community.

Elouise and Jeremy
