TEACH WITH BEATS
Presented by Dr Charlie
Thomson

Explore how hip hop pedagogy can assist you teaching poetry and creative writing. Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, this practical, hands-on session supports:

  • English (Years 5–12): poetry, figurative language, text analysis, creative writing, oral presentation, audience awareness, authorial voice and Shakespeare studies

  • The Arts: rhythm, performance, composition and dramatic expression

  • General Capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding

Bring your creative writing unit and poetry program to life with an injection of hip hop music. This workshop will highlight poetic devices and how they are evident in hip hop lyrics, how your students can identify them and how you can write your own dope verse

Drawing upon research in hip hop pedagogy, you will learn how the principles of this approach can be practically applied in the classroom and assist in developing literacy skills, creative writing capabilities and establishing a FUN classroom!
